Petting the soft skin behind the ears of a wild baby rhino. Bungy jumping for the first time. Passing the CPA exam on my first try. Talking on a fire escape with a young man I’d just met who would years later be my husband. Quiet meditation beside a pond at Versailles garden, warm Spring sun on my face. Nailing the piccolo solo in Stars and Stripes Forever at my high school graduation. Rafting the Zambezi. Awakening to birdsong in the Daintree rainforest. Marriage. Childbirth, twice. Watching the perfect sunset over the trees of Eld Inlet where I grew up. My first ride on a loop-de-loop roller coaster. When I look back at forty years worth of life, the moments listed above, and many more, stick out in my mind as peak experiences. I’m thankful for those moments and wouldn’t take any of them back, but what I’ve noticed as I compile this list is that until my mid-thirties, the lion’s share of my memorable moments were based on my accomplishments and special adventures. That’s changed. The big moments are great – sometimes even better than great - but they’re not what fill my heart on a daily basis. It took me a long time, but I’ve finally slowed down my pace, refocused my priorities. These days, a spectacular moment is the one captured above. A warm fall day at the playground after school, teaching Connor how to use my zoom lens (the kid’s five and he can shoot!), letting him practice shooting while I do baby bench presses with Makena. We’re all having a good time and it feels like all is right in our world. I’m so thankful that I’m able to recognize that I have peak experiences every day. 10/1/07
