Tuesday – May 14th – Mykonos, Greece is gorgeous! We rented an ATV 4-wheeler and toured the island and saw one breathtaking view after another of the sea and the ships and villages. At the beach there was a narrow road - on one side it was a long strip of restaurants. On the other side of the street were beach-front seating areas for each of the restaurants. They were more like open pavilions or tents and some of them were more open tiki-hut styled so people could watch the beach while they ate. People walked up and down the little street and waiters and waitresses walked back and forth from the restaurant kitchens to the customer seating areas on the beach to take orders and deliver the food.

We decided to tour an ancient castle and city wall on a mountaintop. On the way up the mountain we saw signs directing to an old monastery on the same mountaintop that we thought would be interesting. Bill drove us on our ATV around the curves and twists of the mountain almost all the way to the top where the monastery stood but it looked like it had been vacant and completely boarded up for a long time. In fact there were chains on posts across the road and “No Trespassing” signs. The waist-high weeds we would have to walk through to get to the monastery further convinced us, we didn't want to go there.

The castle was in such ruins it was little more than rocks and rubble. Nothing identifiable as having ever been a structure. A rusty chain at the entrance to the ruins was closed with a rusty lock to keep people out. The grassy area surrounding the castle was taller than our waists with no pathway to the castle - it had long been abandoned, just like the monastery and no one was maintaining it. There had been no attempt at restoration or even preservation so it wasn't much more than just a pile of rocks. This was very disappointing – so sad that nothing remained of this old castle.

We then rode the ATV to a low wall by the sea and ate our ham sandwiches from that Bill made for us on the ship this morning. Bill had stopped earlier at a convenience store and bought us each a Coke and a surprise! A bag of fun-sized Kit Kat bars for me and a bag of Bounty coconut candy bars for himself!
