In Peru, on Lake Titicaca, the Uros live on floating islands which are made of reeds. They constantly maintain them by adding new reeds as those underwater rot away. Their houses are also made of reeds. Depending on the size of the island, there can be from 2 to 10 families living on it. There's also a bigger island with a school for the younger children. Older students go to school in town during the day and come back to the islands after school. They originally started living this way to evade enemies. There are around 40 of these islands where several hundred people live. Tourists only go to a certain part of their "territory" and islands are rotated so they don't have tourists looking in their houses all the time! (also to spread the tourism economy throughout the community) Amazing lifestyle!
