For my mom's dance album...Like every year, the trail to my solo was a weird one. This year, we started with "Memoirs of a Geisha" which I was really psyched about because I like Japanese culture thanks to all the anime I watch and manga I read. Since there were no costumes for that, which was surprising, we moved to "Scheherazade" but my solo instructor got bored with that music. Then, after talking about Disney with him, we decided to do "Il Mondo e Mio" ("A Whole New World" in Italian) since we always do Spanish dances and never anything Italian BUT that idea was scrapped after my instructor saw "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1." He fell in love with Jennifer Lawrence's version of "The Hanging Tree" and asked if I'd be willing to dance to that song instead. As I'm a fan of the books and the movies, I jumped at the chance to play in the role of one of my favorite characters. Problem was that the song "The Hanging Tree"...well, it's not a very nice song. It's not a song that is entirely appropriate for a so-called family show. My solo instructor and I, in order to allow me to dance to this song, came up with this elaborate plan so the studio owner wouldn't bother us about the song. Instead of calling it "The Hanging Tree," it's just "That song from the Hunger Games," we NEVER mention the lyrics, and we NEVER EVER talk about the scenes attached to the song from the movie. The bow in the picture is not used in the dance--- because it would make an awkward prop to sling on and off my shoulders ---but I do mime shooting a bow and arrow quite often in the dance. I also get to do the District 12 salute at the end of the dance instead of the traditional curtsey because it's what Katniss would do. (I do have a Mockingjay pin on the costume...it's on the waistband of my skirt.)
