"Fort Churchill was constructed in July 1860 as a result of Indian attacks in the region. Settlers wasnted protection. This desert outpost guarded the Pony Express route and other mail routes. It was built as a permanent installation. Adobe buildings were erected on stone foundations in the form of a square facing a central parade ground. The average strength of the the post was 200. During the Civil Was it served as an important (Northern) supply depot and a base for troops patrolling the overland routes. The fort was abandoned in 1869.
