I was very disappointed to find that the tomb was closed but even if it had been open, it would have been impossible to get to it. Needless to say, inside the church it was a madhouse of confusion as we watched processions for several hours! However, we were told the tomb would be opened later and I was determined to wait out the crowd!

I imagined how this place would have looked in Jesus' time – as it would have been as a place outside on a hillside without a big fancy church built over and all around it. All the marble, tapestries and gold and silver in this highly-decorated church made it very commercialized to me and I had to really focus to think about how it would have been 2,000 years in this is the location. This would have been just a barren hillside with a tomb on the side of the hill. At this point, rather than feeling anything spiritual I just felt exhausted, overwhelmed and almost suffocated from the crowd. It did not help that a fight actually broke out in the church while we were there which had to be broken up.
