This photo/layout was actually intended for Amanda's (scrapanda) November 2015 Music Inspiration Challenge. I actually had photo printed and ready to go and had narrowed down the papers when my whole "roof thing" happened on Nov. 30th.... Anyhow, the song I had been given back then was "Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran. I took some of the lyrics and wrapped/printed them around the photo edge.

**This was a quick project, after I figured out what I was going to be doing! This photo/layout had actually been intended for Scrapanda's November 2015 Music Inspiration Challenge over at Scrapbook.com. On November 30th I was all ready to get to work, just as soon as I got home from taking my youngest to an eye appointment. I had my photo printed with (some of) the words from Ed Sheeran's “Thinking Out Loud” printed along the outside edge, and I had narrowed down which papers I was going to use. However, by the time I got home, the roofers had shown up, and my scrap area was covered in dirt. And I mean covered! It was a nightmare! Long story short, after the roof, and all the clean-up was completed I (finally!) moved into my own scrap-room (YAY!!) and I was (finally) able to unpack my sewing machine (YAY again!).
Now, on to what products I used for this project!
First, every die cut on this layout came from the Etsy store “The Cut Shoppe,” and the files used were “Love Letters,” and “The Love Club” and cut on my Silhouette Cameo.
The white background cardstock is a textured cardstock from American Crafts and the white cardstock for the heart die-cut is smooth Bazzill. Both of the red cardstocks are Core'dinations that I have had for probably close to 7 years, so it's a good thing that Core'dination cardstock is very distinctive or I'd have to shrug and look confused when asked who the manufacturer was! The patterned paper behind the sewn on heart die-cut is Webster's Pages “Drifting” from their “Dream In Color” collection, and the purple patterned paper under the photo is Echo Park's “Floral” from their “Arsenic and Lace” collection. The light blue-ish patterned paper…this is where I do get to shrug and look confused! I pulled it from my “scraps” box and it hadn't been bought or used recently enough for me to even attempt a memory!! The transparency is from “The Paper Studio,” but I don't know if it has a specific name! The ink/drops are Ranger's Dylusions Ink Spray “Funky Fuchsia,” and lastly, the little strip of washi is from Pink Paislee's “Cedar Lane” washi tape book.
Ok, now what I did! First, the way I choose a paper when I'm not sure how it might look is to take a photo of it and import it into my Silhouette library as a pattern fill or to just open in and scale it down to 12x12 (my pictures are large, and it's easier to scale down than it is to scale up and keep the image clear!). If I do the former then all I need to do is “fill” my cut image so I can see how it will look or, as was in this case, fill a 12x12 square since it was going to be behind the die-cut. (In the cases of just opening the image, I just make sure to scale down to a 12x12 square.) Then, I make sure the cut file is on top of the fill and use the Subtract command (Object>Modify>Subtract) to show what the pattern will look like behind the cut file.
After I figured out what patterned paper I was going to use I put it on my cutting mat, loaded it into the Cameo, and cut the outline of the heart mat cut file, just the outside edge! Then I cut the heart mat from the Bazzill and cut the embellishments and title from the Core'dination's.
I stitched the photo to the transparency with a decorative stitch (I think it was #19) from my old sewing machine, a Brother XL 6562 (I have since bought a new machine for reasons I'll get to in just a moment!). I then stitched the background cardstock, patterned paper, and heart mat together. Now, I wanted my stitch length longer than what came out, but I had thought that maybe I had forgotten how to use my sewing machine in the two years I had had to have it in storage, it turns out that it had suffered some water damage the previous year when our “storage room” had suffered a bit of a leak and no matter what I did the stitch length would not change, I even went so far as to dismantle the machine! And this is why I have a new sewing machine, plus it was about 15 years old! I just thought I'd clarify in case anyone wondered if it was because of the product or some other reason. I loved my machine, I bought it new and owned it until the day I replaced it, with another Brother I might add!
After I had all the parts for my layout ready I started tearing the edges of the papers I wanted to use under the photo and stacking them various way until I found the arrangement I liked. Then, before gluing, I started arranging the Core'dination cuts until I found I like using the darker cardstock underneath everything and the lighter offset and on top. Sometimes if I'm worried I'll forget the arrangement I just made I'll take a quick photo on my phone (it's been a lifesaver at times when one of the boys or my husband distract me mid-layout!), but this time I just started layering and gluing until I had my stack in place!
I actually didn't think of adding the Dylusions mist until the end, and I wasn't about to try and spray, so I just unscrewed the top and let the drops fall from the straw end of the sprayer part, or if the drop was just hanging and refusing to fall off I would lightly touch it to the paper, or I tapped it with my hand lightly (very lightly!) to get the smaller, more random looking drops. After that was all said and done I just started adding the smaller hearts using hot glue for the pop up effect and, because I still thought something was missing, I added the bit of washi to the upper (left) corner! I literally stopped when I felt it was right! That's my best scrapping advice, do what feels right to you!**
