Then we visited an old fort (Fortaleza Real Filepe) because it was only a few minutes walking distance from where we were to catch our boat.

There were guides who gave tours of the fort but when Bill inquired about what time the next tour started he was told it would be over an hour to wait. Bill told the guide we had boat tickets to leave for Palomino before then and would not be able to take the tour so she offered to take us (Sandy was still with us) on a private tour! Because there were only 3 of us we got to see nooks and crannies we would not have seen if we had gone on the regular tour with the larger group.

Once we went inside it was dark – in places she had to tell us to step up or step down because we couldn't see the steps. It was all uneven cobblestone which made walking even trickier and it didn't help that we couldn't see much, especially going up some of the spiral rock stairs.

At one point she showed us a narrow gated area and had the 3 of us go into that little hallway. It was so narrow that Bill had to turn sideways to fit; I walked straight ahead but my shoulders pressed into the walls on both sides. At the end of the small dark hallway was a tiny little room. That room was a jail cell that held up to 8 prisoners! I'm not sure there was even room for 8 people to sit down at the same time!

The guide had collected our cameras before we went into the cell – when we got though the hallway and into the cell she took our cameras and took pictures for all of us looking through the cell bars.
