Very interesting to read and see this in the picture. I can't imagine trying it. I like the striped background you chose, really compliments the pictures.
I had to laugh at your description of the betel nut We used to see bags and bags of it when I worked. It is a narcotic and I literally seized hundreds of pounds of it. Can't imagine chewing it and having such colorful teeth!!! They say they have good teeth. The juices from the nut kill the bacteria. I don't know if that is true.
I don't know if you have heard of PAN in India? You pronounce it as paan & the outer covering is the betel leaf and the inside has crushed betel nuts and other ingredients. It does make your tongue red. I don't know if this is similar to what you saw there.
When pregnant, I ate the betel nut in the betel leaf with a calcium based paste/powder as this was known to aid in digestion, something we take even after the baby was born.

Love the diagonal striped paper for this section. So sad that so many chew that root. I remember reading about it in Michener's "Hawaii" (at least I think that is where I read it).
The poverty in this village was just overwhelming and heartbreaking. as is the poverty in all of these small villages.
Fortunately the weather is warm and tropical and they do not have to deal with ice or snow so they are able to survive quite comfortably in these little raised huts. I did not see evidence of indoor plumbing or electricity in this village so most likely it doesn't exists here.
One thing I found most disgusting - notice the man on the right holding the baby? His teeth are red and rotting. There is a root most of the people here chew called beetle root. It turns the entire mouth red while they are chewing it and it rots the teeth and permanently stains them red. We were told it gives a buzzed feeling like a drug and both men and women chew it. Everywhere we looked, people were chewing it and almost every adult we saw had red, rotting teeth..
When beetle root is chewed it creates a lot of saliva so the person has to spit. A lot. Absolutly nauseating. I'm sad to say it is popular in all of the little islands around here. One of the women on the ship had to try it and really regretted it. She said she had to stay in bed for 3 days afterwards because she felt sick and light-headed - her head wouldn't quit buzzing.
