Monday, February 24th, 2014 – I was really excited about visiting Yap Island in Micronesia! I wasn't quite sure what to expect, I just knew we were very privileged to have the opportunity to visit this obscure and out-of-the way island.

When we got off the ship we walked to the tourist information canopy to pick up pamphlets and get a map and advice of what to see. Usually these booths are manned by women in tailored skirts in either blue or black. They are always complemented by low, sensible shoes and starched-looking long sleeve business blouses. That is pretty much the standard all over the world.

Not so in this port. Today the women who greeted us and answered our questions were topless. The ties and leis they had around their necks didn't hide the fact – the women working in the open-sided information canopy were topless. And shoeless, but that didn't get our attention nearly as much as the topless part.

I realized my uneasiness wasn't so much at seeing bare-breasted woman as much as it was that Bill was also seeing bare-breasted women. However, I could also see that it didn't matter much to him.

We had seen bare-breasted women all over Papua New Guinea but this was different – these were young women working in what we would consider a business position. They weren't the local dancers who danced for the passengers by the gangway as we disembarked from the ship. Nor were they the women in the remote villages back in the hills. These were women with professional jobs and we were interacting with them! I don't think I've ever had a conversation with a topless woman before and it was weird – and even weirder to see Bill talking to them.

Bill bought me a beautiful flower headpiece from one of the women which he put on his head first to be silly. I took a picture of him and then he placed it on my head and I wore it the rest of the day. It was so pretty! I even wore it to dinner on the ship that night!
