We joined 2 other people and spent part of the day with our taxi-driver who was also playing the part of tour guide and introducing us to life in Yap, Micronesia.

I had heard of stone money but since it is only found on Yap Island in Micronesia, I had never seen any before. I didn't expect it to be so big – some of was bigger than we were with a hole in the middle. Many of the houses had stone money in their front yards and we saw one street with only one house on it which was lined with stone money. The person who owned that house owned this entire row of stone money which lined the road for about a block.

At one time it was used to swap and trade (how they moved it around, I do not know).

Our guide explained to us that if a person has stone money on their property, they are considered to be wealthy. The more stone money they have displayed in front of their house where everyone can see it, the wealthier they are thought to be and the higher position they have in the community.

I asked if the stone money was ever stolen from someone's house and they said that theft of the stone money was never a problem. It would be extremely difficult to pick up a piece and steal it because of the size and weight. Also, since every piece is shaped a little differently, it is all easy to identify. No two pieces of stone money are exactly alike. Our guide said that anyone on the little island could identify all the stone money so if someone stole one, everyone would immediately know who it was stolen from.

I was surprised to see so much stone money! It was everywhere!
