Journaling: Ann had surgery on her knee on Nov. 9, 2015 to repair a severely worn & torn meniscus, as well as replace a threadbare tendon with that of a cadaver. Expecting the meniscus to be torn in the back, behind the knee, the doctors had an unpleasant surprise when they discovered the meniscus wasn't just torn, but shredded, and not just in the back, but all the way around. To add a little more spice to the mix, they also found that the bone was chipping away - far more damage than originally anticipated making the surgery take several hours longer than planned.
At first Ann was under strict orders not to so much as rest her foot on the floor for fear of the pressure undoing some of the surgeon's handiwork. And, she had to wear this stiff leg brace to keep the knee immobile. Now, don’t go thinking that I wasn’t feeling compassion for my girl’s predicament, but that leg brace gave me visions of sending her careening down the road while I cheered her on with a, "Run, Ann! Run!" It would have been pretty cool to see it disintegrate while she ran with the wind blowing in her hair... Sorry. I digress. Where was I? ...Oh, yes. It wasn't long before she was given a pair of crutches to hobble around with, and seemed like just a minute later that she graduated from the crutches to a cane.
Now, like the crutches, the cane is gone, too. Ann is healing well, if slowly. We were warned that a full recovery would take almost a year. She still walks with a limp, but she wears only a soft brace to help hold the knee, and I no longer have the urge to send her racing down the road. She hasn’t been able to return to work yet, but another six weeks or so should have her to the point where she can attempt it if she feels up to it.
These photos were taken just a couple of weeks after her surgery while she was still in the stiff brace and using the crutches. I think they show her unique markings and festive coloring pretty well. She wasn't supposed to have the brace off at this point, but she really wanted some pics of her rather phenomenal speckling.  If you look just under the bench she is sitting on you can see the infamous brace… Kind of makes you want to hum the theme song to Chariots of Fire and say something catchy about life and a box of chocolates, doesn’t it?
