Starting at the first picture: This is called "the long steel stitch". The drawing shows the front side of the card. The stitch on the front is always the same length. When the pattern says 1-5, it means you start at the back in the 1st hole and go to the 5th hole and put the needle to the back again. At the back put the needle 1 hole further up to the front again and count back 4 holes and put the needle to the back again. Then the next hole to the front side again. And on the front count the 4th next hole and go to the back again. And so on. I hope this is understandable. 1-5 ,means your stitch is 5 holes long. It confused me when I used it at first, because you have to count 4 holes further, but the 1st is always where you hav put your needle to the frontside.
