Look at you in the Tuk Tuk. That's a neat way to get around and this one looks nice. The caftan sounds very pretty. Good to hear there were no more snakes!
oh a new caftan - I am sure we will get to see it later in the cruise layouts! I know about sea stars and jellies but it is soooo hard to remember. That tuk tuk at least looks like it is a newer model. I never got to ride in one in India as women on their own are not allowed out as part of the office rules and no one was going to let me go on a tuk tuk ride...
The new t-shirts and caftan sounds so pretty. I know the caftan is wonderful with sea shells and sea stars. The tuk-tuk actually looked new and cool. So many of them I have seen have been living on a prayer. I love local markets. You really get a feel of a place.
My day is complete. I just learned that a tuk tuk doesn't sound like fun, and starfish are now sea stars and jellyfish are just jellies. Who knew?! π
When the van returned us to the port this was the end of our Sri Lanka excursion but we had plenty of time before we had to be back on the ship so Jan and Marge walked to a market where they could shop and they also wanted to try to find another temple that sounded interesting.
Bill and I hailed a Tuk Tuk what they use in many Asian countries for a metered taxi. A tuk tuk vehicle is really a frame over a motorcycle so there are seats. The front seat is actually centered in the vehicle and motorcycle handlebars come out of a hole in the center of a dash. It has the steering and operational apparatus (and brakes) on the handlebars of the motorcycle part. Passengers ride in the tiny back seat.
The tuk tuk driver took us to a big modern hotel where we used the internet in the lobby for an hour. Then another tuk tuk took us to a street where license plates were sold Bill bought one very sad looking beat up Sri Lanka license plate.
Bill told the driver he wanted to purchase a t-shirt for me so we drove down the street which was lined with markets on both sides some selling fruit, some luggage, some meat and fish and others were selling clothing items. Whenever we saw one that looked like they might have tourist t-shirts the driver pulled over and Bill hurried out and looked through the merchant's little shop. If they had t-shirts in my size he held them up for my approval. Finally after the 3rd or 4th market vendor, Bill found a cute t-shirt for me with a multi-colored elephant on it and the words Sri Lanka.
When we got to the port there were vendors set up around the ship so Bill bought me another Sri Lanka t-shirt black with a silver elephant. He also bought me a bright yellow caftan with sea shells and sea stars on it. (We learned on this cruise that starfish are now correctly called sea stars because they are not fish same thing with jellyfish, they are now called jellies because they are not fish either.)
I was very pleased that after the first two incidents with the snake charmers in the morning we managed to get through the rest of the day with no more snakes or snake charmers!
