Next we went to the ‘Old Town'. It wasn't what we expected – we thought there would be a quaint old town with little shops and cafes. What we found instead was a city almost in ruins. We did not see any operational businesses and nowhere to even buy a soft drink. The streets were all cobblestone and we did enjoy walking through the old stone and rock buildings.

The most interesting thing we saw in Old Town was Nossa Senhora do Rosario (Our Lady of the Rosary) Church.

This is the oldest existing building in Ribeira Grande (this is the correct spelling), constituting one of the rare examples of Gothic architecture in Sub-Sahara Africa.

The main part of which was built beginning in 1495, was erected in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary, the patron saint of Black men.

The church was visited by Vasco da Gama in 1497 on the voyage on which he discovered the maritime route to India. Christopher Columbus visited the church on his third voyage to America in 1498.
