After touring the adorable little town square area and William Shakespeare's birthplace, we wanted to see a few more things which required transportation. Perfect timing, the hop-on hop-off bus pulled up and we were soon seated comfortably on the top deck cruising around the Stratford-Upon-Avon countryside. Our first stop to get off and explore was Anne Hathaway's family home/farmhouse.

When William Shakespeare was 18 he became romantically interested in Anne Hathaway who lived with her family in their large farmhouse just outside town. It was very scandalous in those days, as Anne was 26 years old! The teenage William used to walk to her house to court her and that is where their first child was most likely conceived.

He was too young to be married but obtained special permission from the Bishop to marry Anne, since she was carrying his child. They were married and are said to have had a happy marriage. After the first child was born Anne later gave birth to twins (a boy and a girl).

Anne and William never lived in her family farmhouse, which is now called the Ann Hathaway Cottage. When they were married, William took her to his home where they lived with his family.
