July 4th, 2014 – We were really in a tiny little village today. We were in Ny-Alesund which is a scientific research village in Svalbard which is in Spitsbergen, Norway. There is a road up one street and down another. We could not step one foot off the trail. There were serious polar bear warning signs everywhere so there was about a 2 block area and that was the complete town and the dirt road around it. Beyond that was just snow, mountains and wilderness – and apparently, polar bears.
