Security people were posted every couple yards around the perimeter of the road make sure that no one strayed off the road. The town included one postcard/souvenir shop, a tiny hotel for visiting researchers to stay and a post office which is the most northern post office in the world.

Other than that, there were houses where researchers lived and wooden house-type structures which were research labs, many of which were marked with the names of different countries. We were told it would take about 30 minutes to walk around the trail which covered the entire town including houses and research facilities, and return to the ship – and that includes any time you wanted to spend in the tiny souvenir shop.

We could not get a telephone or wifi signal – not even at the hotel! There isn't even local phone service! We were that isolated!

The hotel was called (in English) the North Pole Hotel because it is as close as you can get to the North Pole. This place was the end of the line!

NOT IN JOURNALING - The picture of us by the mailbox is the most northern mailbox in the world.

When we got back on the ship there was no phone signal, internet, cable - nothing. We were too far north for any satellite coverage to reach us. It was that way for several days.

I tried to call my son once using my cell phone - no signal. No signal on the phone in our room. No cable so no tv. No internet service on the ship. Everything was down for several days.
