One day a week (ok really its only like 5 hours) I sacrifice to cooking breakfasts, snacks, and lunches. Nearly everything my family eats is from scratch. I don't like food from a box and we have not stopped for fast food in over 3 years. It started when DH and I wanted to loose weight...which we did. I lost about 35 pounds and DH has lost over 60. The problem is, we couldn't go back. If we eat processed foods, we end up really tired and yet cant sleep well. We get gassy and have headaches. It just not worth it. I find I loose more time in the week being too tired to do anything more than watch mindless tv than I do if I just go ahead and cook everything. So yes 5 hours a weeks I spend making salads, egg cups, banana or pumpkin muffins, jars of yogurt and fruit, or nut energy bars. And it sucks...it' s a big mess I have to clean up and it takes away from play time. And this typically does NOT include any prep for our nightly dinners...those get made in the mad dash after I get home from work. But as a working mom, its worth giving up weekend time to make the mornings a easier (plus its cheaper than eating out every day). Its a part of who we are. The best I can hope is that it gives my daughter the same passion for food that we have and a sense of responsibility...sometimes fun has to wait if what you're working on is really important to you. It is to us (and I certainly do not expect others to agree...In this day and age of busy schedules I understand that it is not likely to make the top of everyone's list). But for now its what we do and this is just a snap shot of our lives over the past 3 years. So I if you ever just want to hang out on a Sundays, do a food swap, or share some recipes let me know...I'll be in the kitchen.
