I designed this layout for Canadian Scrapbooker magazine using the Graphic 45 ABC Primer Collection, and it appears in the newly released Spring 2012 issue.
As soon as I saw this G45collection, I knew I wanted to scrapbook one of the photos from my mom's school days. I am blessed with a mother who scrapbooked, albeit the old-fashioned way, and I have in my possession her albums ....the kind with black pages and pictures adhered with black photo corners. They are so precious to me :)
This is her class photo from 1940, in a one-room school in the country (she grew up on a grain farm). I know the photo isn't the greatest quality, but she is the one standing to the right of the last girl seated on the right...she is wearing a dark pinafore dress.
I tried to make a blackboard using real wood veneer paper from Creative Imaginations. The actual blackboard is blackboard paper from DCWV...but I tried using chalk and it was too smudgy, so I scratched the letters of the title "School Days" with a pin.
I made the fabric flower with DCWV Fabric Paper...it is adhesive backed and so easy to work with. I created a tutorial for this flower and how to use the DCWV Fabric Paper to make a card on the Canadian Scrapbooker magazine website/blog www.canadianscrapbooker.ca/jackie [date March 6, 2012]

The flipped over border on the blackboard element is SO SMART! LOVE this page- the pen nibs on the clock chipboard are fantastic as well. Great details!

This is fantastic!!! Love the chalkboard (it looks real) and how clever to scratch the words into it. I have chalkboard paper too (which I haven't used yet) and wondered how chalk would actually stay on and not get smudged off. Great idea...and it looks like chalk too! Love the clock and the handmade flower too...such a great layout!!

Oh My Kelly, what a fabulous page!!! I truly love the stunning design!! It is perfection!! Everything is placed so wonderfully with such care! I love the photograph and the story behind your Mom's schooldays and scrapbooking! The old scrapbooks on black paper with black corners are great too, I think, they have a charm all their own! My Mom made me one for my baby book all those years ago, only she used white ink to write down the captions etc... I love all the authentic looking details here...your chalkboard is such a great and creative embelly and love the cutouts especially the little girl with the books. I always love doilies and the old photo is still wonderful even if you think it isn't the greatest quality it is a treasure right? I have and love some of those pps and now I need to get them out..I've been playing with G45's other line, Little Darlings, another fave. I'd love to see what you do with those.

What a completely cool lo! Everything about it is thought through and well designed - the blackboard is perfect - the scratching makes me think of old slates (which were way before your mom's time but a great idea anyway)! The pen nibs as the clock hands - brilliant! Fave.
