Road Trip 1945

Summer 1945. This two page layout commemorates a road trip taken by my Mother, her older sister and brother.

Mom and her sister Betty had taken a train to So. Carolina to meet their brother Frank at Parris Island. It was a joyous reunion!!

Frank, a Marine Sergeant who has served 2 years in the Pacific Campaign, was being transferred back to Boston to await discharge from active service.

The road trip back to Massachusetts would be shared with 2 other Marines. Because of time constraints it would be a whirlwind affair. The Marines were expected to arrive expediently via the most direct route. They were given a gas mileage ration of $0.03 per mile and a meal allowance of $1.00 per meal. They were to "maintain decorum at all times." I am unsure whose car they traveled in.

Mom and Betty both wore the wide legged loose trousers for women that were in fashion, carried identical "bohemian" handbags, and wore new white sandals.

The highlight of the road trip was a stop in Washington, D.C. The siblings posed at some of our nation's most recognizable landmarks - the Capitol Building, The Jefferson Memorial, the Washington Monument, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier....and more. My Mom, who had a great love of history, must have especially relished this opportunity!!!

Included on this commemorative road trip layout are a photo of the sisters in front of the car on Parris Island, the sisters in front of the Tomb of the Unknown and on the steps of the Jefferson Memorial, Frank and my Mom on the steps of the Capitol Building. Included is a pin that was purchased for Mom by her brother, and this pin joins the two Capitol steps photos. An "American Campaign" medal that belonged to Frank is also included, as well as old postage stamps from the era that Mom saved, and a vintage fold out paper "fan", miniature size.
