Assignment C Journaling:
“When I got to New Orleans, I didn’t know what to expect. Even four months after Katrina, I knew that there was a lot of damage left and people still not able to return.

Beth’s apartment is in the garden district and is, thankfully, on high ground. Besides losing the couch (and a few framed prints to mold) when the water-heavy ceiling fell in, they made it through safe and sound. Chris had been back for a couple weeks already when Beth and I drove down, so everything was back to (mostly) normal.

What I most noticed about my visit, though, was the French Quarter. It’s been there for a few hundred years and it doesn’t seem like it’s going anywhere: Felix’s, Dad’s favorite oyster bar to visit when they’re there, was closed but was soon to re-open; Café Du Monde wasn’t back to 24-hour service, but was open from morning til night; the beautiful buildings, seedy bars, and antiques shops were all beginning to be back to business-as-usual. Most importantly (to me) was that the air was filled with jazz music day and night. Katrina knocked the city down, but she is a city that is borne of trouble, of change, of rich heritage and history, and she is not a city to give up.

Though the parts of the metropolitan area near Lake Pontchartrain continue to suffer, the spirit of New Orleans is alive and well in the French Quarter. The old town holds onto the spirit that will pull the city back to her feet.”
