Bio:
From our very first newsletter, this is the story of BasicGrey as told by Rachel Brenchley:
Originally, my intention was to license my work,
so therefore, I had not considered a company name. It wasn't until shortly before ACCI [now CHA Summer] that my husband and I decided to start BasicGrey.
With less than a month and a half to start a company, design a website, and finish my paper (not to mention the daily chores required of a mother of two little ones), I was running like mad! It all came about as I was working on the website and I decided to upgrade from dial-up to DSL.
When I set up the account, the host wanted a name. So there I sat, having to 'in an instant' come up with a name. Staring blankly at my recently painted Kingston Grey entry hall, I blurted out 'BasicGrey.' I figured I could always change it.
However, upon further reflection, I recalled a favorite professor in college who taught me to always matte my work on grey matte board. Grey is neutral and does not overwhelm.
Then, as I dove into the design of my website, I found black, white and grey to be the perfect combination for the job. I love how our corporate image of a rough, edgy, grey and steel warehouse look shows off the beautiful papers, rather than overwhelm them and compete for attention.
The name may be different and edgy and fresh, but so are our papers and products. We enjoy thinking out of the box. We are pleased with the name and we hope that even if you're not, you'll still enjoy our products.
