"The Four Freedoms"

by James J. Metcalfe
Halycon House, 1948, "Poem Portraits"

Freedom of worship and freedom of speech...
Freedom from want and fear...
These are the things for which we fight...
The things we hold so dear...
Freedom of conscience in choosing a church...
And freedom in going there...
For marriage, baptism, to be confirmed...
Or silently offer a prayer...
Freedom of saying whatever we think...
Whether in heart or in mind...
Voicing opinion for all to hear...
Passive or cruel or kind...
Freedom from hunger and bitter cold...
Freedom from deep despair...
From shadow and noose and firing squad...
Following everywhere...
These are the freedoms for which we fight...
Wherever we wage the war...
These out of all the things on earth...
Are worth while fighting for.
