Before we take a look at what I'm to be,
we need to look at others, who came before me.
My family is a guideline for traits I will need,
not just DNA or a family creed.
Will I be intelligent and prosper in my life,
and will I be compassionate for other people's strife?
Will I stand for something or blow in the wind?
Will I walk on others or have a hand to lend?
I need to take a long look back before I turn to go
into a future that I do not know.
These people I call family will surely help me see,
that my life is a gift from God and that's a victory.
So look on my old pictures and giggle if you must,
but these people stand on solid ground and that's something I trust.
