"A CAT AND HER VARMINT"

I NEVER DID LIKE ANYBODY
MESSING WITH MY FOOD,
IT ISN'T VERY NICE
IN FACT I CALL IT QUITE RUDE !

I HAD JUST EATEN A BITE
DOZED OFF - TAKING A NAP,
WHEN OUT OF THE BUSHES A VARMINT APPEARS
OUT OF SLEEP I CAME WITH A SNAP.

IT WAS TRYING TO NIBBLE IN MY FOOD DISH
CAN YOU EVEN IMAGINE THAT !
WE GOT INTO A TUSSLE
I GAVE THAT VARMINT ONE QUICK SLAP.

IT JUST FELL OVER
RIGHT THERE ON THE PORCH FLOOR,
MY MISSIS HEARD THE RACKET
SHE HURRIED OUT THE DOOR.

IT WAS ALREADY DARK OUTSIDE
IT WAS GETTING LATE AT NIGHT,
SHE SAID TO ME - "WHAT HAVE YOU GOT 'LIZZIE'?"
SHE TURNED AROUND - FLIPPED ON THE LIGHT.

JUST LYING THERE ON THE PORCH
NOT MOVING - MAKING NARY A SOUND,
I FIGURED I KILLED THE VARMINT
AFTER I HAD PUNCHED THAT CREATURE AROUND.

I THOUGHT SURELY I HAD HURT IT
IT WOULDN'T MOVE AT ALL,
JUST LAID THERE LIKE IT WAS DEAD
I DIDN'T KNOW IT COULD STILL CRAWL.

MISSIS REACHED AND TOUCHED IT
ASKED ME - "KITTY WHAT DID YOU DO ?"
ITS FUR WAS ALL WET
SHE MOVED IT WITH THE TOE OF HER SHOE.

THAT LITTLE FELLOW JUST LAID THERE
DIDN'T OFFER TO RUN AWAY,
IT WAS THE BIGGEST "RAT" I EVER SAW
SURE MADE MY MISSIS PROUD OF ME TODAY.

SHE PICKED IT UP BY ITS HAIRLESS TAIL
WILL HAVE TO PLACE IT IN A SAFE PLACE TONIGHT,
I GOT RID OF THAT STEALING VARMINT
TAKE AND SET IT FREE IN THE MORNING LIGHT.

FROM NOW ON THAT CREATURE
WON'T BE EATING OUT OF MY FOOD DISH,
WHAT I CAUGHT - WAS A LITTLE BABY OPOSSUM
SHOULDN'T HAVE BOTHERED 'LIZZIE' I BET IT DOES WISH.

I BELIEVE THAT VARMINT HAD BEEN HERE BEFORE
WHILE I WAS OUT HUNTING MICE,
BUT IT WON'T BE BACK - STEALING FROM ME AGAIN
NOW FOR A PEACEFUL NAP - THAT SOUNDS REALLY NICE !

Written.....August 21, 2008
Living in the country, we have been bothered with opossums in the past.
They are bad to catch chickens and hunt at night. They have a very long
snout, a row of very sharp teeth. This was a baby one and very small.
They grow up to be quite a nuance around a farm. My big yellow cat caught
it herself and didn't know what to do with it. First one I guess she had
ever seen...it being a baby. It was cute.....but not a pet for me !
