"Forgotten Soldier..."

FORGOTTEN SOLDIER
BY DANIEL AGBOGIDI 23JUL08~

I'M FEELING SMASH FACED,
RUNNING FACE FIRST
INTO A BRICK WALL...

MY LEGS HAVE GROWN TIRED.
NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO WALK,
BARELY STRONG ENOUGH TO CRAWL...

WEAKENED BODY BROKEN;
LIKE THE STRAY DOG,
I FEEL BEATEN DOWN...

THE WEIGHT OF THE WORLD
RESTS ON MY SHOULDERS
AND NOW MY CHIN RESTS HEAVILY ON THE GROUND...

MY FINGERTIPS HAVE
THE RISIDUE OF BROWN SOIL,
FINGERNAILS FILLED WITH DIRT...

BADLY BATTERED BRUISED HANDS
THAT HAVE REACHED OUT
BUT ONLY KNOW PAIN AND HURT...

SO I ASK, DO I DESERVE
TO BE STAMPED WITH TRAMPLED FOOTPRINTS AND SPIT ON
AS I LAY WITH MY FACE SUBMERGED
IN A PUDDLE OF MUD??...

WOULD YOU CARE TO SHOW COMPASSION
FOR A MAN WHO'S SKIN HAS BEEN BUBBLE BLISTERED
FROM THE RAYS OF AN UNFORGIVING SUN??...

BAKED BY THE HEAT BUT NOT DONE,
WITH THE LAST OUNCE OF MY STRENGTH
I'VE MANAGED TO COAX MY LIMBS
TO ROLL MY BODY OVER AS MY EYES
TRY TO FOCUS ON A BLURRED VISION OF A BLUE SKY...

CAKED FILTH CLINGS TO ME
WITH MY GREASY MATTED HAIR
WHICH IS COUPLED WITH THE
ACCUMALATED DISEASE SPAWNED FLIES...

THROUGH IT ALL, I MUST MAINTAIN ME.
CAN'T LET THEM SEE ME STAGGER,
I MUST NOT STUMBLE...

I HOLD MY SIGN THAT SAYS, "WAR VET",
AND WITH EVERY PENNY THAT DROPS TO THE BOTTOM
OF MY EMPTY STYROFOAM CUP, I REMAIN HUMBLE.~
