Before you were conceived I wanted you", "Before you were born I loved you",
"Before you were here an hour I would die for you"
Life isn't a matter of milestones but of moments
I put my hand inside of his, though it is very small,
I get a sudden feeling, that he's feeling ten foot tall.
He trudges yard and garden, banks both high and low.
One would think, lest he be near, I could not even mow.
No matter what I'm doing, if I turn too sharp or fleet,
Inevitably, I'm going to trip, over two small feet.
Fixing car or leaky pipes, painting house or such,
I can feel his watching eyes, quicker than a touch.
No, he's not my shadow, though he very well might be,
He's just a little boy, who thinks a lot of me.
As for me, I'll tell you, I nearly burst with pride,
When my son just takes my hand and walks by my side.
For this is what it means to be a father, from the start
Knowing when I give my time I give my son, My Heart.
You see it really matters all the time that we both share.
For when my son has grown up he will remember....I was here
Sometimes it seems like only yesterday that we first met but when I look
into my heart and see all the rainbows and touch all the memories, I know
that our love has been walking hand in hand with the precious gift of time.
