This is a Can't Live Without product. When it first came out, I wasn't sure whether I would really use it. I am so glad I bought it. The only negative I have regarding the product is that if you use it with a paper piercer or instant setter, anything that is using the mat for a cushion, I have noticed that the indentations remain on the reverse side of the mat (not the work space) and that is causing my mat to curl up slightly at the edges. Now on to the good stuff about this mat:
The mat itself is large and gives plenty of room to work on a 12x12 page. The ruler is magnetic and sticks to the precision mat and I use it frequently to cut straight lines with my Exacto rather than pulling out the paper trimmer. It works great because you can line the ruler up exactly using the measuring tools on each side of the mat. I also use the magnets that come with the mat to hold my rub-ons in place, which prevents them from slipping. As I work on the page, I use the magnets also to hold the pieces in place and help me visualize whether I like the layouts before I commit. I would recommend this product to everyone! I

I Love, Love, LOVE this mat! I have been wanting one of these magnetic mats for a long time and finally gave in and bought one. I am so glad--I don't know how I ever scrapped without it! It is definitely one of my favorite scrapping inventions to come along in quite awhile. The magnetic ruler and other little magnets make laying out a page so much easier--if you put magnets on everything the layout doesn't get messed up as you rearrange things, or when you start gluing things down. I love this so much I am already planning on giving it as a gift to my 2 sister-in-laws that scrap! The only advice I would offer on it is that you will probably want to buy an extra set of the little magnets--I didn't think it came with quite enough. If you do 2 page layouts like I do you may end up wanting 2 of these--if I had more space I would definitely be getting another one!
I love how big it is.
I love how I don't have to pull out the trimmer to cut anymore.
I love how I can hold things down before I glue.
I love how after I glue- the magnets help hold it down for a better stick.
The magnets that come with this are enough to get started I have run out on several occasions. I used my sons magnetix and they worked well as a back up if I needed it.
I did have issues with the mat not holding up to use. I've had it for 3 months now and it had an issue coming apart and warping.
HOWEVER, I contacted basic grey about this problem and they feel I had a defective mat and are replacing it for me. Their customer service is awesome.
And in case someone at Basic Grey reads this I am also putting my $.02 in for a 16x20 mega mat. THat would be awesome.

Well, not really, but I kept looking at it and trying to justify the purchase. Finally, one day I got tired of just looking and I had the extra money and I did it. I bought it, and sincerely, I do not regret it a bit. I love my mat! I can even work with thick chipboard and those magnets are so strong. They keep everything where is supposed to be and you can re-arrange and re-arrange until you are pleased. I even hang it on the wall with paper and chipboard and embellishments, to find it next day just the way I left it. Amazing! I shake it up and down; side to side and IT DOES NOT MOVE. I did have to buy extra magnets but I did not care. If I start working on a LO and I can't finished, no problem. I know nothing is going to move those magnets but me.
This is how I feel about my MM (Magnetic Mat).

I have a larger mood board in my studio used for big album projects but I use this large magnetic mat as my portable single-layout mood board. I prop it up against the wall in front of where I'm working and use the super strong magnets to hold my photos, paper swatches, sketches, ideas and some embellishements for the layout in one place. The layout elements are safely up and off of my drawing table and in one place so I can view them for inspiration before I start the layout. I'm able to see everything I want to use which helps me to stay focused on my intended outcome (though the layout may go a different direction in the end it's nice to have a point of departure in the beginning).

I bought this mat because I wanted a larger surface to work on and a larger ruler. I wasn't sure how much I'd use the magnetic feature but wow! I used it for the first time last night. I loved being able to hold my photo down as I measured out where stuff should go and then just take my photo off. No temporary adhesive...just lift the magnets! I didn't realized when I bought it that the measurements on the edge went down as small as they did. I love being able to find the correct position of something so easily without having to break out my centering ruler. This is a wonderful product and I wish I had bought it a long time ago.
I bought this mat when it first came out. I can not tell you enough times how great this product is. I have arranged every layout on it since I bought it. It will hold all your embellishments in place including chipboard. My husband even used it to make a chart for work one day. The best part about it is the fact that you know what your layout looks like before you glue it all together. I think this product is well worth the money and anyone who scraps should have one. Everyone I know that has bought one--loves it--!! So if you have been thinking about it~~ GO for it~~ You won't regret it.

If you scrapbook, you HAVE to buy this mat. I could not scrap without using it now. I just LOVE it! The grid is a life saver, it is so easy to line the ruler up and cut/draw a STRAIGHT line. It doesn't matter what level scrapper you are, you will LOVE this mat. The magnets are very strong too! No more standing over the table to look at the layout, just apply a magnet to each piece of your layout and lift the mat up! I HIGHLY recommend this to anyone. When you try it for the first time you will wonder how you have scrapped without it!

I just got this today, and it has already become one of my "can't scrap without it" tools! This has to be the coolest idea ever. I have two little kids and eventhough my scrap room is sorta out of the way, my stuff still gets moved around. With this mat even the chipboard stays in place! I can say that you will need to order more magnets though, If you plan on using it as an "work in progress" mat like I am. I HIGHLY recommend this product! ~Brilliant~ (and it looks cute on my desk too! lol)

I have had this for about 3 months. Soon after buying it my DGD was playing and the magnets were lost for over a month. Now that I have it all together again I use it everytime I scrap. I would be lost without it and feel strongly that anyone thinking about buying it, should go for it. It is awesome to secure your LO's without adhesive and then to have unlimited trials to get it just the way you want it. There are eight magnets and I wish I had more. You can get extra magnets at sb.com.

How have I worked without this! The magnets allow you to reposition items until you are satisfied with the LO and ready to glue. The work space and markings are super for 12x12 LOs. Only "negative" ... magnets are so strong they "grab" each other when you move them to the edge of the mat to start a new LO! Not reallly a negative but a tip that you need to space them apart or you wind up with a stack of them!

I absolutely LOVE this product. I have been scraping for about 10 years and wish I'd had this from the beginning.
I have two so that I can use them for double page layouts, or to work on one page while I think about the next.
The magnets hold my photos, papers, and embellishments until I decide if I'm satisfied with the layout. Then the magnetic ruler ensures me that my layout is square and precise.
This is a must have for all scrapbookers and card makers! I love the magnetic ruler and the little magnets that come with it. Although I may order some more magnets. I haven't had any problem with the mat curling or anything and I have been using it daily. It;s a great product and it's one that I wish that I had bought sooner! I would definitely reccomend this to a friend!
How did I scrap without this? I can line things up, keep things in place, use my craft knife... the possibilities are endless! Now I can't scrap without it. I just need to find a scrap bag that will HOLD it so I can bring it to crops.
This is so fabulous. Definitely a great buy, and I would recommend it to anyone!

This is one of my favorite produts to use. Since buying it I've used it everytime I've scrapped. I would recommend purchasing extra magnets if you use alot of embellies. Its great because I can move elements around on my lo before commiting with glue. I say run out and get one quickly. you won't regret it.!!!

I recently bought this mat set. And it very quickly become one of my favorite tools! It is awesome. I love that I can arrange and rearrange my layout or cards. And if I get interrupted, I can leave everything in place using the little magnets!!
I *LOVE* this!! You will too!!!

I love this mat. I've owned one for about a year, and I bought this one for my Secret Sister. The magnets are very strong. I can leave a page partially done and not need to worry about it moving. It's also great with the We R Memories circle cutter, and a craft knife.
This item is great because itholds my tiny items in place when my weaker "stroked" hand can't get the job done. I can now get my journaling done more efficiently without havibg to fasten it down to keep it from moving. Thank you Basic Gray for knowing what I needed.
If it's accuracy you need then this is the perfect tool set. I have a paper trimmer that doesn't cut straight so I use this extra large matt for cutting straight lines and so many other things that need cutting but don't like to cut with scissors.

A very nifty tool for those intricate layouts... Helps keep it all together if you need to put it away and come back. Also great for the flexibility of moving things around until you are satisfied with the way it looks.
Just bought this mat as a present for myself for Xmas and I love it. The magnetic ruler makes cutting straight edges so much easier and I love that it is bigger than 12x12 so you have room to move your paper around.
i love this mat for working on. i can lay out and entire page with out adhesive and make decisions from there. being able to see it done before its glued in place is a priceless addition to any scrappers tools.
Boy, what took me so long to get this? I've only had it about a week but it's great so far. You can line paper up EXACTLY to trim it - so many times I've used a trimmer, it somehow ends up crooked! I also agree with the other reviewers - the included magnets are great for keeping your workspace organized while you're working - especially since I will get up and leave mid-layout, this holds everything in place until I'm ready to return to the project.
I agree that more magnets would be a good addition to this kit. However, I saw that you can buy an extra set of magnets, so I might do that.

This is one of the best scrapbooking investments I've made yet. I love this mat and all it's capabilities. The magnets are super strong! I have trouble keeping them apart at times, but I still recomment the product. The only thing I wish was that I could set eyelets on the mat. I put a small hole in the mat trying to punch a hole with my silent setter so don't attempt to set eyelets on the mat. Other than that, it is a must have!

I love this mat. I purchased one last weekend when attending a crop and used it for the first time. I'm seriously considering buying a second so I will be able to layout 2 page layouts with ease. I like being able to position embellishments, including ribbon and ric rac so I can see how it will look before adhering it down.
I do think this mat needs a warning label attached though........if you happen to have magnetic mammeries (aka, wear a wire bra!) your magnets WILL disappear on occasion. If you lean over your layout a little too closely the magnets tend to disappear. If you are at a cropper and one of your fellow croppers sitting across the table happens to see them before you realize they have repositioned themselves on your being, you will be the punchline of a few jokes and the cause of memories that will last forever!!
All in all, I love this mat and it is well worth the purchase price.
When this product came out I thought it sounded neat but couldn't see spending the money on another mat. But after hearing how cool it was, I asked for & got one for Christmas. I've only had it a few days & can't imagine life without it. It.is.awesome! No more bumping my layout as I try to move things around & skewing everything. Plus I love using it with my crafters workshop templates - I don't have to worry about holding it in place while I stencil. I made my mom buy one for my sis-in-law too.
I will agree with some other reviews - I'm being super careful not to let the magnets hit each other and one of them is still already chipped. And I'm not actually cutting on this mat - just using it to measure the matting and cutting on an older mat. But nothing's perfect. And I think everyone should have one of these.
I'm cheap!!!! I didn't even know how much I would love this product. I decided to buy it with a coupon and a gift certificate, otherwise I don't think I would have bought it. There is another brand that I looked at but this one is the perfect size. I save the GC for things I wouldn't normally buy. Enough - this is such a great mat to scrap on. Usually my lo's are "eye balled" to keep things even - I have rulers (several actually) but this is so much more precise. Losing the little magnets (they are small) worried me but I've been using this for about 2 months and it hasn't been a problem. I would definetly recommend this to a new scrapper as well as a seasoned one.
I can't say enough good things about this mat. I am soooo in love with it! It is so large...gives you so much room to line things up and cut. The ruler is very sturdy, not flimsy like several other metal rulers I have bought. The absolute best part of this mat is the little magnets that come with it! I love the fact that I can be working on a LO...have all the pieces placed, and then walk away. With little ones in the house this is the perfect solution....I have walked back to a project to find it jumbled too many times. And they are perfect for holding down rub-ons and stencils.
This mat is the most useful purchase I have made in a while. I tend to go back and forth scrapping during the week since I work full time and have 3 children, which I am sure many can relate.....This mat is not heavy, but firm and not floppy; The magnets that come with it hold in place very well.I'm an embellisher and they all stay in place now. It's great when I have to go back and forth cause I know everything is not going to blow away since i have my fan on all the time. Up until I bought the Basic Grey mat kit, my pages would wind up moved and now that is not possible !
Didn't take long to get used to using this great mat. Now I don't know how I did without it! The magnets are really strong.
This is particularily good to have when you're at a crop and your workspace is getting cluttered and you're digging around looking for that one little sticker or button that you just had a minute ago, when suddenly you realize that your perfect layout that was in front of you is now scattered about. That won't happen if you have used one of these mats.
Think I'll get another.
I love this mat! I am so glad I made this investment. I keep it on my scrap table all the time. The magnetic ruler is awesome. I use it and a craft knife more and more as my cutting tool of choice. I love taking it to crops, it helps define my area of workspace--my friends and I tend to "encroach" on one anothers space as we spread out!
I defintiely recommend this product as a must-have for all paper crafters.
I love this product, I use it quite a bit when I go to crops at LSS - if your LO is missing something you can take the mat around and match up paper or embellishments without messing up your LO. I love the fact that it comes with the ruler - my only gripe is that all my magnets have chipped, they still work but I wish they would be stronger - chip proof.
This is my favorite basic supply item. I have two of the on my workspace. I love it. It protects my desk and can be used as base for creating. I love the fact that I can use the magnets, hold everything down and come back to project that hasn't moved an inch. LOVE IT!!
I really don't know how I cropped before getting this mat! It is so perfect that I had to get a second one to to keep in my rolling tote for crops. The second mat also comes in handy when I'm doing 2-page layouts. Be sure to get extra magnets!
I asked my DH to get me this for Christmas but didn't try it out until June. I didn't know what I was missing. The magnets are strong and work great. The ruler sticks to the mat very well. I'm so happy with this product.
The mat itself is great, although I haven't used mine for cutting - only placement. The one problem I've had is that the magnets chip very easily -- I've only had mine for a week, and already three of the magnets are badly chipped. It's easier said than done to keep them separate as they are very strong and also tend to grab on to my tweezers and other tools. I've already had one picture badly scratched from a chipped magnet. That being said, I do love being able to pick up a LO in progress to look at it before gluing anything down. And I'd LOVE one big enough for a 12x24 LO. Getting 2 mats means you have to have room on your table for 30 inches, which is excessive, and then the grids don't meet up for doing 2 page spreads anyway, which defeats the purpose of the measuring aspect and means you can't pick the whole spread up as easily.
I got this item as a gift for Mother's Day this year. Little did I know how much I would love it! the magnets that come with it are super strong and hold your work in place with no problem. The 18" ruler is great when you are trying to make a long cut. the only improvement I would make on this product is to include more magnets. Otherwise, this is an outstanding tool to have in your collection!
This item wasn't in Dubai in March 07 - so I emailed all the scrapbooking stores in Houston and was in luck when my husband was able to pick one up for me whilst on a business trip. I was delighted with it and the suppliers here were able to have 'hands-on' insight to its potential to be a 'seller'. Matting became a breeze, applying rub-on too, its usefulness was endless.
I am disappointed though it is not standing up to wear; it has to be treated with respect and kept somewhere flat and not used in group lessons/crops. It does not appear man enough. It warps and doesnt always find a way to heal its self. Having witnessed the mats demiss in the crop arena I keep mine safely and selfishly tucked away for my use only.
The availabilty of extra magnets would be ideal esp when they tend to walk off somewhere. I have found mine in all sorts of places - they do need keeping an eye on.
What would I do without it now!
