I bought this the day I got the scrapbook.com e-mail blast about it earlier this month. But today I held a small funeral and boxed it up to send to Imaginisce for repair / replacement.
Last night while cutting a grosgrain ribbon (and not a cheap spool, I might add) the cutting wire melted to the ribbon. They were completely fused together. My husband and I tried to tear it off with tweezers as best we could, but the wire came out of its base. We were finally able to remove the ribbon with the wire out, and then do minor surgery to put the wire back in but it was slightly bent after that and didn't work as well.
Then today while cutting double-faced satin ribbon from Sam Flax, it did the same thing - only there was no saving it this time - the wire completely melted to the ribbon and they could not be separated. I taped the wire and the ribbon to a card and boxed it up with the i-Magicut to send it in to them tomorrow (as the instructions directed). I loved it enough - when it worked - to hope this one was a fluke and buy a replacement already, but I'm holding my breath.
UPDATE: In less than a week, I-Magicut sent a replacement for my broken one. Awesome customer service and for that alone I'm bumping my review to 5-stars.
I just received this tool and have only cut a few ribbons with it; I'm sure I will discover more features and love the tool even more :0) For some reason, out of all of the scissors that I own, none seemed to be able to cut my ribbons, after tying the bow SHARPLY. Maybe it was because I couldn't get enough tension on the ribbon? Regardless, now, I don't have to worry about that, thanks to the Ribbon Cutter. I tie my bow, attach it to my card, and then cut my ribbon with the Ribbon Cutter - so easy! I have learned to cut on the diagonal because to the marking on the Cutter. But, I haven't learned to cut a chevron cut because most of my ribbon that I have used is 1/4" wide or less; these fingers aren't so nibble as to fold those small widths in half :0) The Ribbon Cutter is small and heats up quickly. My investment was well worth it!
This ribbon cutter is fabulous! I thought it would be bigger - I was pleasantly surprised that it was compact, light weight, and EASY to use. I was excited how fast it worked. Once cut, the edges of the ribbon are smooth and clean. When cutting larger ribbon, the more tension you use, the cleaner the cut. The ribbon cutter doesn't make any noise, so that means I can bring it to any and all crops. The cutter cooled down very quickly. The only improvement I could think of would be to coat the bottom with a rubber coating so it can't slide on a table.
That's what I bought it for: I'm tired of trying to cut and fray-check organza ribbon. This thing does it perfectly in one go.
With heavier ribbon (like the cotton stuff that also frays) you have to hold it long enough to let that little wire burn its way through the ribbon. Pushing harder doesn't make it move faster; just hold it gently but firmly and give it time to burn through.
I've also used it on the butcher's twine which tends to get ragged on the ends and it works great.
We'll see how well it holds up over time but so far, it's a winner for me!
Our family of scrapbookers were really excited when we saw the demonstration for this before it was even available! Cutting ribbon cleanly and evenly, without having it ravel is so wonderful. Especially with a couple of perfectionists that have trouble with things not just so. Now they can always be just so!!! Hooray for us. Have used it constantly since we recieved this wonderful product.
I cut a lot of 6" long pieces of ribbon today with this tool and it worked great. What I did was cut the end off spool first using this unit and then stood up over the unit which was on my cutting mat that has measured lines on it. I put the unit on the 1" mark and pulled the ribbon thru the unit to the 7" mark and then pressed the bar thereby cutting a 6" piece... very fast and easy.
I love ribbon, and have way more that I should, but now, with this wonderful new tool, I'm might have to get more. Provides a clean cut and then seals it so it doesn't fray! How cool is that! It's frustrating to see your finished LO or project with frayed ends on the ribbon...but I don't have to worry about that anymore!!
I make jewelry with organza ribbon. This means that I must sometimes thread many beads or charms over the ribbon I use. Before this nifty tool came along, I had to cut my ribbon at least 4 inches longer than my finished piece. I love this tool! For my needs, it works beautifully. At last!
This is the most revolutionary product around.
I have made cards for years and laboriously used fray less
to stop ribbons raveling. This does everything in one full swoop. Everyone should have one at every scrapping station in their house. LOVE IT.
I love using ribbon on layouts but hate, hate, hate fraying ribbon. This tool is fantastic - makes a perfect cut and seals the edge so there is no fraying. Perfect!!! I can't say enough about this - what a wonderful invention!!
I bought this tool because I thought it would make life a little easier... it has. This thing is really easy and makes perfect cuts to just about any kind of ribbon you put in it, and you don't need to plug it in! Woo Hoo!
wow what a great tool to have when you need to cut ribbon. i have a variety of scissors but the only one that does the work right for me is holtz's scissors. looking forward to when this product is ready for us to purchase.
What a great idea, cut ribbon perfectly, no fraying, no build up on end of ribbon. Love it! Only difficulty would be if you need ribbon to be an exact length- cant see where it is going to cut.
Finally a way to have ribbon on my scrapbook pages and cards without the ends fraying. I am absolutely delighted with this little tool and have already purchased one for my best friend.
I hesitated due to the price, I typically don't spend a lot on small tools but I am so glad I did. It is easy to use and does a perfect job. This is a must have tool if you use ribbon.
Does exactly what it says --- keeps the ribbon ends from fraying. Cuts cleanly and leaves no mark when searing the fiber ends. Easy to use. Angles are marked and easily visible.
I had problems with mine almost right away. The wire that heats up to cut the ribbon broke off so I spent some time messing around with putting it back on so that I could enjoy it. Each ribbon is different and some require you to hold it down longer then others so it takes some practice so I suggest making sure anyone that buys this to have some scrap ribbon handy - if u need some I have a lot to give. I just hope that my customers appreciate the effort I'm putting into making sure their ribbon doesn't unravel or fray. Although I have mine working again I'm not 100% sure I have it on right so I hope everyone else will be more careful then I was.
When I saw this I was so excited. I needed something to seal off my ribbons. I use them on everything from paper bag albums to simple ribbon bookmarks. This works like a dream and is so easy to use. I've used it so much already. It is small and compact. My only complaint is the little wire that melts and cuts the edges of the ribbon sometimes comes out- its an easy fix but sometimes frustrating when a ribbon gets stuck to it and you have to cut it all over again. Other than that, itís a great little product.
This is a great new tool that I would recommend to any crafter. I mainly make cards and I do sometimes like the frayed look, but for other times this is perfect! Be careful not to leave in too long or the ribbon will stick to the wire.
Beautiful cuts, heats up quickly and easy to use. Does not work well on cutting short pieces which is a sadness for me... but I may be one of the few that needs one inch pieces for creating bow art on cards.
The cutter works very well on some ribbon. I have had trouble with organza ribbon cutting cleanly. The concept is great and I would recommend though stating it has limitations.
i was hoping better for this product, if you want to just cut and sear end you have a hard time holding it in place without wasting alot of ribbon, as far as sealing the ends though it is great, much better than using open fire to accomplish this.
I almost came on here to write an amazing review for this product. It worked great for about 2 weeks and then the wire popped out. Into the trash it went. I read other reviews that said the same thing happened. I should have listened. It's one of those things that work great but break to easily and won't last long. Very disappointed. I would not recomend this to anyone. :(
