I like the idea of illumination on my scrapbook pages, however this one with such a large knob doesn't work for me. Needs more instructions on its usage. It also needs a different type of "on/off switch". Should I need illumination for a layout again, I might purchase it because I haven't seen any other product to light up my layouts.
They work! Have not used them on anything yet but have a few ideas.

does this set have a timer built in? Where you turn it on and it automatically goes after after a certain time period?

No timer. You twist to turn on and off. Great little lights, bright, don't get hot.

This is a great idea. BUT what if you don't need as many as are on the string? Obviously, they can't be cut so what to do with extras. Just stow them where they won't be seen?

Since I don't know what you are putting them on it is hard to say. The wires are extremely fine so you can coil them, scrunch them up and hide them behind things. The lights are really tiny so you can use lots of them and they will not overwhelm your project. I hope this helps.
