Hi Maria, think of the masks as stencils. They are most commonly used with Gimmer Mist type spritzer paints but they can also be used with chalks and distressing inks. Lay it flat on the paper - you don't have to tape it down. Watch the build up of paint droplets after spraying. When you lift up the mask they can roll off splattering onto your design. If it does, it may be covered by other elements or just work it into the design. i hope that helps!
