I have 1000s of travel photos that I never seem to get around to scrapping so for quite awhile I have been thinking that a Travel Challenge would be fun.

Rules are simple:

1. Join anytime through August 31st.

2. Paper or digi are welcome _ one lo for voting but extras for sharing are fine.

3. Leave love.

4. Do the twist and get an extra vote.

5. Vote beginning September for your top 3 favs.
Those who vote get an extra vote for themselves.

I might try to get to those SPB photos after all.. I need to fill in the spacers left in the photo album ("project life"-style)

At least 5 miles from home.

Really though it can be any trip. Definitely not just out of the country.

What is SPB?

5 miles? I can sign up to that LOL))) i suppose, camping doesn't count, it would have to be a travel-touristy thing..

SPB is Saint Petersburg in Russia, we went there maybe 9 years ago - my last trip to Europe before kids LOL) I have a 500 page album of shots of gorgeous architecture and museums and noble houses, but I left room to make photo inserts - names of places, notes, stuff. Would that count?

yes I think that would count Olesya!

and so would the camping. Travel is travel and if it is out of your normal routine and you aren't at home then for purposes of this challenge it qualifies. Day trips qualify.

Do they have to be from our own trips? I inherited a few of my Uncles photo albums when he died, and he was in Vietnam, but there's lots of travel photos from Europe. Either way count me in, because I just got back from camping and I could always scrap those or some older trips.

Karen I was just looking in your gallery to choose a lo for your challenge and was thinking how you have such great travel photos so I guess you will be able to do this with one pair of scissors tied behind your back.

Here is my lo. We lived in VA and did a mini-vacation, 4 day trip to DE/PA. We were on the riverfront and saw this ship coming up/down? the river. It docked where we were. The boys and dh were so thrilled to get an up close look at it!

Such an awesome thread - thank you for hosting it! Will it be an ongoing thread every month! Obviously there is enough interest!

Do we just choose the photo we want to submit or do we submit other travel layouts as we do them. I love to see everyone's travel layouts and it is even more fun if it is a place I have been or want to go!

I need to go through the entire thread and leave comments - haven't started that yet but will go back and do that later this afternoon.

Thanks again for letting me join!

Henri, as long as there is interest I will continue the challenge.
How many can you submit? One for voting and any others you would like for sharing.
If you go to the Challenge section of the gallery and click join when you are ready to post the one for entry you mark the box when you upload.
Here's the link:

Please would everyone who hasn't joined over there yet do so? That makes it far easier for you to leave love too.

I haven't done one yet for the challenge so I will wait until that one is done before I register like you said. I think I am understanding correctly.

With the number of people signing up, I think this was a great idea!

Today I'm scrapping Porto Delgardo in the Azores (off Portugal) and as soon as I finish I'm moving on to the leaning tower of Pisa. This last trip took us to several places in Italy, about 6 of the Greek Islands, Egpyt (spent the night at a hotel with a pyramid view), Istanbul then the old Orient Express train rail (not he elegant Orient Express train - that doesn't run anymore) to Bucharest, then a couple days in Tranylvania (toured Dracula's castle - the one Bram Stoker used for a model for his story) and then on to Budapest, which we loved. Then we too a train to Venice but we were there the month before so we just chilled and relaxed for 5 days on the military base until we could get a flight home. Did not leave the base this time!

All of that is on my desk to scrap so I will find something that I can play with and have fun! Don't know what yet.

The tour was awesome. Dracula's castle was really quite charming. There was one old stairway to the second floor where you could visualize him carrying his victims thought!

There is a museum of torture devices from that period upstairs near the bedrooms. Some really evil looking things!

When you take the tour they tell you all about the actual royal history of the castle when the tour starts. Then as they progress they go into Dracula's tie-in.

Dracula, was actually inspired by a character named Vlad the Impaler. He didn't drink blood or turn into a bat but he impaled hundreds of people. He stayed in the castle a very short time. He his much closer associated with other castles but he did stay in this one.

The real reason it is labeled as Dracula's castle is because Bram Stoker saw it and thought it would be perfect for his Dracula character. In the books when he lived in America for 300 years, this is the castle where he was said to have lived before fleeing to England. That is what they tell you on the tours.

We met a couple of guys at our hotel from Paris who were there because they were vampire hunters. Okay then.

Read Anne Rice's books too - really enjoyed them! I should probably read them again - been so long!

I am thinking of having custom diecuts made that look like dripping blood that say, "Dracula's Castle" "Count Dracula was here" "Dracula's Courtyard" etc...

In Transylvania they have banks named "Bank of Transylvania" and I am going to scrap that with the title "Got Blood?"

Actually, the castle is near the little town of Brasov and that little town is absolutely charming. I wish we had more than 2 days to spend there. It is one of the cutest old towns I've ever been in! Not all commercial like one would think. Several hugs squares all cobblestone and old German/European style shops lining the square all around. It was awesome!

At the end of the city is the old black church. Before any gasps at the political incorrectness, it was built of grey stones. When the town burned in the early days the gray stones were stained or turned dark gray - almost black so when you look at the church it is now black on the outside so everyone calls it the old black church. You can see a few other high church steeples in the areas around the main part of town.

There are gates to the city which are awesome - I love old city gates. There is one gate you go through to get to the old cemetery and the oldest school in Romania and another church or monastery.

If anyone ever wonders if it is worth it to go to Transylvania - yes and again, yes.

Not just for the Dracula stories, but it is just a great place to visit!

Marty I don't know if it is on my end or sb.coms but I cannot link/embed the right side of your layout. I am getting the cannot embed message, which makes no sense because you did that here.

I am having quite a few issues with this site today - can't get my work uploaded at all.

Marty - I can't wait to see the other side of your Ephesus layout! Did you go to the Basilica of St. Jean? That was very close right there in Ephesus and I just stood mesmerized at the spot where John the Evangelist was buried!

I am in complete awe of your photos - they are incredible!

Hi Henry. . .yes, titled Celcius Library. :-) I've been there too many times to count - most of DH's military career was in International Affairs. . . With Turkey. I've had some amazing road trips there.

It's been fun comparing the changes over the years. . .:-). I finished the page but I'm going to wait until the morning to take pics.

I've just been there once and loved it! I've heard of Ephesus all my life in church - it was such a thrill to finally see it.

I am amazed with your photos. What kind of camera are you using? I would love a big nice camera with lens that change but it is too much for us to lug all over with us. When we are out and about all day the point and shoot (its large for a point and shoot but not as big as the really nice cameras) - the weight of it wears me down. To carry lenses and things - I would love to but just can't carry it all.

I am totally jealous of your beautiful photos.

Henri, the Transylvania tour sounds so cool. Thanks for sharing all the neat details. When I did my speech in college, I read all about Vlad the Impaler - not a good guy! I'm sure I'll never travel that far so I enjoyed living it through you.

Kelly, me too. That's one of the reasons I wanted to start this challenge - to see where everyone else gets to that I probably never will.

Not that I haven't been fortunate enough in travel anyway but not the way that Henri and Marty have.

I like seeing all the places right here in the states that I haven't been to and very likely won't make it too. Each area has such unique places to go/be and things to do and I love to see/hear about them all.

Oh yes, I love my camera - I use a Nikon D300, and it's working pretty well, and then I have 4 different lenses that I haul around. . . not all at once though! I have my Nikon 24-70 F2.8; an 18-200, a 300 and a 400 zoom. I don't carry the 400 much, only if I'm going to be someplace like our Safari or Alaska.

I fell a few years ago at work and ended up with a shoulder replacement, of course it was my right side and I'm right handed. I used to carry my camera in my hand with the strap wound around my wrist so I was ready all the time, and no one could steal if from me (figured it was a pretty good weapon considering the weight of it!) LOL. I was really straining myself carrying it so my son (the techno/camera/computer geek) bought me a shoulder strap - it lays across my left shoulder and comes down to my right hip and my camera hangs off of it there. I LOVE it! I keep it right where my hand is so I've got my hand on it and the lens at all times, I can let go and not worry about it, and it's in easy "quick" reach. Being "quick" is really important to me. . .things happen fast and I want to catch it (birds, shot before someone walks into it, etc.). :-)

Here's the other side of my Turkey Layout. . . (well, the first Turkey Layout! :-) This is the Celcius Library at Ephesus :-)

I remember the first time I was at Ephesus, almost no people around . . . it's growing be leaps and bounds. They used to have a big area that had rows and rows of building pieces. . . and they've been busy putting this city back together like a puzzle for years, truly an amazing piece of work. :-)

It's rare that you'll see "strangers" or "groups" in my pictures, I really work to make it happen, but sometimes, here and there you'll see people just because I want to show how many people are really around. I mean. . .there were probably a few thousand people at Ephesus this day!

The travelling has been an exciting twist that came about in my life in later years and if not for these particular events - it would not have happened.

Bill first saw me when we were both 17 years old at a concert in Miami but I got away before he could catch up with me to get my name. He tried but couldn't get through the crowd and then I was gone.

He looked for me for 2 years and spotted me at Hot Shoppes, a drive in restaurant like Arnolds in Happy Days 2 almost 2 years later. This time he got my phone number. It wasn't easy, as he was driving the car parked across from mine. He recognized me and sent the car hop to get my number but I sent a note back telling the car hop that I didn't give my number to boys with who were out on dates with other girls. (He had a girl in the front seat with him and another guy with a girl in the back seat).

The girls came over and told me that they were from out of town - their mother and Bill's mother were best friends and their mothers had asked Bill to show them around Miami so he called his best friend. They were not on a date and had no intention of going on a date, just out of town friends of his mothers and Bill was doing a favor for the two mothers.

We dated and nearly got married - we were engaged and even almost ran away one night to get married but it didn't work out.

I broke up with him and for the next 38 years he stayed in touch with my parents, my brothers, my friends and even called me from time to time. I found out from a friend that he was even across the street from the church when I got married and watched me come out in my wedding gown and saw my new husband and me drive away.

During the 38 years he went into the army and within months he was taken into the Special Forces and became a Green Beret. He spent 20 years as one of these elite guys and that is why we have flight privileges that allow us to fly almost anywhere in the world that we have a US military base unless it is a war zone. Military hops are free to any retired military people who have served 20 or more years.

We book a lot of cruises, mostly repositioning cruises which are usually pretty inexpensive. Those are the ones that start from one place and end in another. We combine those with the military hops which allow us to fly to Italy for 12 days, then get on a cruise ship in Civitavecchia (port city for Rome) and then cruise to 2 places in Egypt, 3 in India, Thailand, Malaysia, Dubai, several other places for 26 days and end up in Singapore.

We had no clue what to do once we got to Singapore so we spent 3 days and then went to a military base and got a hop to Tokyo where we spent 4 days. Then we were ready to move on and got a hop to Okinawa where we spent 9 days. From there it was easy to get a hop to Hawaii where we spent 3 weeks. Then we went home.

Our frequent and varied travel all over the world is because of Bills 20 year military service. Without it, we would not be able to go to the places we go. Our travel would be very limited.

We take at least 2 big vacations a year of 3-4 months and one or two smaller vacations for a month or less.

We travel on a budget - we are on a fixed income, although a comfortable one. Bill's military retirement which is not great but we are grateful for it. He was enlisted rather than officer - he was a master sergeant but loved Green Berets and not willing to give that up to go the officer route although it greatly reduces our monthly retirement income.

We both get social security and we collect rent from 4 houses we own. Bill really makes a very income from selling license plates - it is a very lucrative business. I don't want anything to think we are suffering because we are on a fixed income, its a very comfortable fixed income but we do have to be careful. That is why we don't allow ourselves to fall in love with balcony cabins and extravagances - if we spent it all on a really expensive cabin and tours (which we would love to do), we are retired and would sit home the rest of the time wanting to go again but not being able to afford to.

We go as inexpensively as possible so we can go a lot. Just a different way of travel. We have traded off the luxury for the privilege of being able to go a lot. And at our age and being retired and having so much time on our hands - we chose the frequency option. We can't have both.

We don't pay very often to eat off the ship although once in a while we do surge for a great seafood meal. When Bill finds a place with whole-belly clams, his favorites he just can't resist. Or sometimes we will just find a place that we want to eat just for the experience. Like the Pera Hotel in Istanbul where Agatha Christie wrote "Murder on the Orient Express". Ourtrageously expensive but worth it for the experience. We made a memory that day.

So that tells a little bit about me and why we are able to travel so much. Just wanted to share my story. Several here already know it but I wanted to explain the circumstances that allow us to travel so much. I really do feel blessed!

Thank you so much for the camera info Marty. It sounds like the shoulder strap is the perfect solution! Mine goes around my neck but quickly hurts my neck and weighs me down!

It sounds like you have one main camera that you use along with the lenses. My main fear of upgrading is that I would not be able to carry it. Bill is good at carrying things for me but he already has the backpack everywhere we go with my stool in it and a second camera that he uses. He does not like to use a large or heavy camera himself. He usually likes to just stick it in his pocket although he keeps it around his neck if we are in a situation where he is taking pictures and then he sticks it in his pocket again when he isn't using it.

Going to get travel pictures printed today if its the last thing I do!! That is the down side of not printing from home. The up side is, I get better quality prints when ordering out!

when I take architectural shots I don't like noise in the background - garbage bins, extraneous people, cars etc. the Moose does not think of these things so I have to crop a lot of photos with me in them.

I do sometimes like to include a shot of one us just to show sheer scale.

I always ask people to take pictures of us. If we see a couple and one is taking a picture of the other we always offer to take a picture with both of them in and then we ask them to take one of us. It works every time.

Of course, when Bill is snapping their picture he always says, "Hey, this is great - I just got another camera to add to our collection!" I just smile and say, "He is kidding... really!"

Everywhere we go I try to get pictures with both of us in them. Not always possible. I also like to keep strange people out of my photos but it isn't always possible. Sometimes I will wait 10 or 15 minutes to take a picture of a fountain or monument when no one else is in the pictures. But I like us in them - that personalizes them for us.

The entire 38 years Bill kept in touch with me one way or another. In 1976 he was in army and travelled through San Jose where I lived with my first husband. Bill called (first contact since I got married - my parents and brothers always made sure he knew where I was and what my phone numbers were). He called us to tell us he would be in San Jose for a couple weeks and since 6 years had gone by my ex said to invite him to dinner.

Then about 5 years later I moved to Meridian Mississippi and was working in a TV station. He found out from my brother and called me there. That was in 1981. He married 10 years after I did and had 2 small kids.

In 1991 he learned that I was divorced and he was also divorced. We talked on the phone every night and I told him I was seeing someone else - not serious. Then he quit calling one day. Just didn't hear from him so I didn't think he was interested. He never talked to me like he wanted to be a couple again, just as really good friends that talked every night.

Then he quit calling so I agreed to marry Fred - the guy I was seeing since Bill didn't seem interested. I did not know he had gotten out of the army gone to Australia on a whim for 3 months with another guy who got out of the army the same time he did. They went to the terminal to get flights home and there was a flight to Australia so they got on it. After returning to California 3 moths later he drove to Georgia to surprise me. But, he showed up on my doorstep to find out I had married Fred 2 days earlier!

Bill says that put us back 10 years because Fred and I were married almost 10 years. Bill called about once a year to say hello.

One of my friends told Bill when Fred and I divorced Bill waited a little while for me to get over Fred so he wouldn't be a rebound romance for me and then he took a job in Arizona for 6 months in 2006. He started emailing me and we emailed up to 50 times a day and then he called almost every day - and it turned into several times a day.

He also told me then that his reason for going to Georgia in 1991 was to try to get back together but instead found out I had just gotten married again. So he stuck around for a few days and helped Fred and me move into our new house, then he went back to Florida.

After Fred and I divorced Bill and I had an email-phone romance for about 6 or 8 months he told me he was going away for 3 weeks to a license plate convention in Las Vegas - could be longer. He was meeting his brother and sister there and was taking a van full of license plates. He would email and call when he could - but for me not to think he was out of my life and get married to someone else again. We still hadn't seen each other since that dinner at my home with my ex-husband in 1976.

Out of the blue I asked him, "Do you want some company on the trip?" He said, "You would take a road trip with me for almost a month when we haven't seen each other since those few day in Georgia when you married Fred in 1991 and we haven't been on a date since 1970? That's 37 years - almost 38!

I told him yeah, I'd take a chance and we agreed he would have air fare and at any time, if I wanted to go home - if it didn't work out, he would take me to the nearest airport and pay for my trip home.

It worked out great - I never wanted to go home.

After that he took a trip for about 4 months to Thailand to go scuba diving and snorkeling and visit an army buddy and ended up going all over the place, including Hawaii for a month or so.

When he got back we went on a cruise for 7 days to the Cozumel, Grand Caymen, Belize and somewhere else and he asked me to move to Florida.

I moved to Florida on Christmas eve, 2007 and we were married a year and a week or so later - January 3, 2009.

What really blows my mind is that when we got together for the first time in 1969 he said to me after we had been dating for a while... "Do you remember the Jay and the Americans concert?"

I told him that I did, but that I had gone with a girlfriend - I did not even meet him until 1969 - 2 years later.

He told me, "You had on white pants and a red sleeveless top and your hair was down in kind of a flip - pretty long." He said he tried to get to me to get my number but I got out of the auditorium before he could catch up and then I was gone. He said that is the night he fell in love with me and has loved me every day of his life since then. He said he looked around Miami for 2 years before he found me in 1969 at the drive in restaurant on a Sunday afternoon.

OK guys. . .here's a little fun! We were in London, and I had plans on having tea with some Scrapjazz friends (who I met on-line). . . so we thought we would make a quick trip that morning over to see the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. Well, it turned out to be a bit more than that. . .the crowds were incredible! We started talking to a very nice lady near us (who lived outside of London), and she explained. . . it was the Queen's Birthday Celebration! What they called the Trooping the Color, military parade and bands, horse guards and fly overs. And of course all of the Royals in their carriages! I'll be doing another layout for the Queen, but I couldn't resist doing one of Princess Kate (Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal) :-) I used some paper piecing roses that I bought in Wales on a previous trip. . . I had so much fun with all the girlie stuff! :-)
