It depends on what you want to do with the ink pads.

Distress inks: For non-detailed stamps where you want the background to shine through. Also great for coloring.

Versafine ink: for highly detailed images.

Staz on: for stamping on non-porous surfaces.

I like memento for coloring in the images
chalk ink (any brand) for edging
umbrella is new and seems popular for stamping colored images

If anybody has a good alternative to 'versa fine' for detailed stamps I'd be happy to hear about it. I have tried memento, but they're not as sharp.

IMO VersaFine is the best for fine images. I've tried a lot of kinds too. Don't you care for it?

I totally love versafine. But since they don't sell it on scrapbook.com so I thought that maybe there's an alternative that I just don't know about.

I would recommend at least one ink pad that is not water based (i.e. StazOn or similar) in a basic color like black so that you can do water coloring, etc. on your images without the ink smearing.

And then I would recommend getting a set of colored smaller ink pads that are water based like Memento.

Later on you will likely want to add in some of the little chalk inks as they give a different look and are very nice to work with.

I like Memento. I use it to color my stamped images.
