Journalling reads: One of my favourite December events is the Secret Room, it’s an annual event I am involved with helping organise with the school PTA. Basically we purchase somewhere in the region of 1500 gifts, priced between 10p and £2.50 and we hold a non uniform day where we ask parents to donate £1 or a new gift for the secret room. On the day the kids all get to visit the Secret Room and purchase gifts for their family and friends. All the money raised is used for projects at school. We then wrap and label them for the kids to take home. Even though the concept seems simple it takes a lot of organising behind the scenes, from trying to source a huge variety of gifts, to deciding on reasonable pricing, begging parents to help on the day and advertising the event. The school has to work out a rota for the classes to visit and arrange teachers and teaching assistants to help. But the day is always so much fun. This year we decorated the room, wore some Christmas jumpers, angel halos and had Christmas music during the event to make it feel more festive. There is nothing as cute as helping little kids pick the “perfect” gift, trying to remember how many siblings they have and watching them try and grasp the concept of money. This year me and the kids decided that it would be nice to do something for all the kids who didn’t bring money to spend in the Secret Room, so they wouldn’t feel left out. We had fun filling 100 little organza jewellery bags with 2 little tealights which the school gave out for us.
