My mother was adopted by her aunt and uncle and didn't even know until she was 14 that her "aunt" was actually her biological mother. It was the depression and Doris and George were very, very poor and my Mum was a sickly child. Doris's older sister, Alice, decided that due to Doris's own health problems (she was deaf), George's unemployment and my Mum's health issues, she'd just take her and raise her in a much nicer situation. I didn't even know this until Alice (who I will always think of as my Nana) was dead and I was well into my 20's. Doris was long gone, having died in England in 1957 from a curable kidney problem that was ignored, so I never met her. I did meet George when I was there in 1961 as a baby, but of course, I do not remember him at all. I understand he was in awe at how blonde and fair I was. (Mum's side of the family is all dark haired and blue eyed...beautiful combo I wish I had inherited! Mum was the odd one out with red hair and green eyes though). ANYWAY...I have so many unanswered questions and my Mum's natural sister isn't very forthcoming with details or photos. This one was taken when Doris was about 11 and is fuzzy...but I cherish it...and as I dig into my genealogy, I am more and more curious about who Doris Ann was....
