These pages are for a circle journal group I'm in. The theme of this journal is "What's in a Name?" and we were supposed to talk about the meanings of our kids' names and why we chose those names for them.

Journaling on Ryan's page reads:
I must be honest. We had a girl's name picked out before we even conceived our first son. When we found out we were having a boy, we found ourselves faced with the difficult job of naming him. I wanted a name that ended in n because the firstborn in my family has had a name that ended in n (including me, Erin!). We had a few ideas – Benjamin, Aaron – but eventually we settled on Ryan. We found a book that gave its meaning as “laughter,” and we really liked that meaning. Laughter has been a central part of our relationship since before we were even dating. His middle name was much more difficult. For a long time he was Ryan Daniel, but on the night before I was induced we decided we didn't really like that. So when I went into labor, we were still up in the air. In the end, Art told the nurses at the hospital that his name was Ryan Joseph and that's his name! Joseph means “he shall add,” so his full name means “he shall add laughter.” Which is a wonderful name for a child who is so silly, funny, and fun. He definitely lives up to his name by making us laugh every day! Ryan is a joy.

Journaling on Sam's page reads:
When I became pregnant with our second child, we still had a girl's name chosen. When my ultrasound showed another boy, we were excited but once again we struggled with a name. We both really liked the name Samuel, but I also liked the name Isaac. I thought it would be fun to have both their names mean “laughter.” But I didn't like Isaac Samuel, and Samuel Isaac would have made his initials SIK, which neither of us liked. We finally decided that Samuel was a definite. He would be named after the same grandfather Art was named after. For awhile we called him Samuel Arthur, which I still really like, but once again on the night before I was induced we ended up without a middle name, when Art decided he didn't want to use his own name. We settled on Samuel John, mostly just because we liked how the two names sounded together. Samuel means “asked of God,” and John means “gift of God,” so his two names basically mean “a gift asked of God.” And he has been. Although Sam has a more demanding temperament than his brother, he also is more affectionate, more loving, and more sensitive to those around him. Sammy truly is a gift from God, constantly reminding us to trust the One who created our little gift!!
