I've been feeding the songbirds the past couple of days since the snow is so deep and it's been so bitterly cold. I can't stand the thought of them struggling to survive in this brutal weather.

The little sparrow type birds - I'm not sure exactly what they are - black with white chests - are usually first. Then the cardinals arrive. It takes a while, but eventually the blue jays figure it out, and when they show up, the peace is shattered as they muscle their way to the best spots - where the bird seed is thick.

But when the weather is this bad, there is no rivalry - the males put away their posturing for territory and everyone co-exists peacefully on my back porch. The smartest birds have figured out that I don't mean them any harm and won't fly too far off when I show up to replenish the supply of seeds.

This fellow was hanging in the closest tree, waiting to see if I was going to go back inside. I think he was a little disappointed when I sat down on the porch, hoping to get a good bird picture. He sat there without moving for several shots - and eventually outlasted me. It just got too cold for me to continue to sit there, and I went inside, at which point he dropped to the porch, found his spot, and resumed his meal.

Photos like this one REALLY make me wish I had a telephoto lens. I can only imagine the kinds of photographs I could get with one.
