Red Earth Festival is held in OKC during the second weekend of June. It's a celebration dance of the Native American tribes, open to the public. I've been wanting to go for years, but this year, I finally did. The fancy dancers are, of course, my favorites. These young men are fully of energy and they're loads of fun to watch.
I'm not sure of the tribes here - but anymore, the tribal purity is a myth. Most of the native peoples are a mixture of several tribes. I'm relatively sure that this young man is primarily Cheyenne.
Their dress is called their regalia, and the headwear is called a roach, and is made from porcupine and horse hair. I know this because I asked the young man sitting behind me about his clothing.
He was a mix of Cheyenne, Arapaho, Souix, Otoe, and I forget the other three. He was charming and happy to share part of his cultural heritage with me.
