On a crisp autumn day, Marc and I took the boys to the Ludington State Park for a nature walk. The two boys trotted along the trails, scooping up leaves and tapping on trees and boulders with twigs that they'd found along the way
Suddenly, Jackson stopped in his tracks, staring intently at the ground below his feet. WHAT WAS IT? It was a fuzzy, green caterpillar! Jacks cocked his head from side to side for a moment, never taking his eyes off of the creature. He then reached toward the ground and in an instant was holding the wooly critter between his chubby fingers.
I watched in awe as my rough-n-tumble baby boy held his new friend gently, studying every aspect of its being. These are the moments mothers cherish... observing the soft, caring side of their offspring. I stood by silently, feeling as though I "must have done something right" in raising my child. I Ouuuuu'd at his graceful touch and ahhhhhhhhh'd at his patience and observance.
It wasn't long before Logan and Marc had realized that Jackson and I had fallen behind. Logan was quickly at his brother's side, peering down at the caterpillar. The two boys ogled the creature for a moment until, becoming bored, Logan instructed Jacks to 'put it on the ground, verrrrrrrrrry gently'. Jackson complied.
The poor fuzzy caterpillar had only been on the ground for a few seconds when {SQUASH!} it quickly became one with Logan's tennis shoe. I gasped and my jaw dropped in shock. Surely my sensitive little Jackson would begin to cry! Nope. My little nature enthusiasts giggled for a moment before skipping down the trail. I suppose as a mother of two BOYS, I should try to get used to this sort of thing. But, I'll never forget the poor creature who met his demise on the shoe of my son. Yes, ...
CURIOSITY killed the caterpillar, indeed!
