Remember This Place…

To my children,

This is a place in the Arizona desert where 2 roads meet. Two roads, hours away from civilization. Erected at this place is a school house, to this date 5 years old. You may wonder how something so new can be a prominent figure in your family history. This is how:

Around 1916, the Abraham Bundy family began settling this isolated area (also known as “Bundyville”) on the Arizona Strip by applying for 640 acres to dry land farm and raise livestock. The residents of Mount Trumbull erected and attended school at a school house built in this place. Children would attend school there until grade 8 and then would have to go into a larger town for a high school education. For many, their only education was received here. Your fathers Grandma, ***** attended school in this school house, and lived full time on the Arizona Strip with her parents. Your grandma, ***** didn’t attend school there, but had visited while the school was still in operation. Gradually, after farming became more difficult due to climate change, families moved from the Mount Trumbull area.

Decades after inhabitants left Mount Trumbull, descendents of the Bundy family worked together to restore the old abandoned school house in the 1990’s. Your great grandma, ***** was mainly in charge of the restoration. Your father and several of his family members put forth a huge effort in restoring the old school house.

Sadly, the school house was torched by vandals in July 2000. The school house was completely burnt to the ground. The only thing left standing was the flag pole and plaque that your father had placed as his Eagle Scout project. Descendents of the Bundy family were insistent that a new school house would be built in its place. No one could bear to look at the hole that it left in the landscape when it was gone. A decision was made to rebuild the school house in the same location and was completely built by the descendents of former and current residents…. Aka, your family.

Today, we travel to this place often. We hope to teach you as much as possible about our family history… Although this school house is only 5 years old… it is an exact replica of the original. We hope that you will always remember this place and the story of your family history.
