My English Grampa, Stanley Derbyshire, was a soldier for British forces in WWI and was captured by the Germans, spending several months in a German Prisoner of War camp. When the war was over, he told us they simply opened the gates and told them to start walking. He literally walked back to England!
During his capture, he was allowed to send a note home, but was only allowed to use 5 words. Always frugal, Grampa used four: "Send soap, Love, Stan"..guess he had his priorities!
For those who have asked about my photos...I do not use the originals. I simply scan them, photoshop to correct color, darken if faded, etc. and then print out and age with sand paper and distress inks. Doesn't take nearly as long as it sounds though! My originals are all kept in archival boxes or framed around my house!
