No, this is not a soup but rather, shrimp cooked with dried sichuan peppers and bean sprouts in OIL!
This is what happens when you cannot read Chinese and are eating in a Chinese restaurant in China.
You look at photos and point. And hope for the best. Luckily, we are not usually picky.
Or sometimes, in our case, our 9 year old daughter reads whatever words she can make out and announces, “It‘s a shrimp dish” or “I think it’s pork”.
Mainly because the names of dishes in Chinese is so poetic sounding but gives no indication of what it actually is. There is usually colloquial, local, or historical reference.
