Journaling reads (sorry so long, unusual for me!):

I am truly proud to be an American. I know most people feel the same, at least on the 4th of July. But I am proud everyday. I am proud to live in a country where freedom is the foundation, even if often we take this for granted. I am proud to be able to speak my mind without fear of punishment or scorn. I am proud to have the liberty to choose my religion, choose my husband, choose where I live, choose what I do for a living, and choose how to raise my children. I am proud that our country tries to help bring democracy to other countries. I am proud to participate in the electoral process, even if the person I vote for doesn’t win. I am proud to have been raised by parents who love this country. I am proud to have a father that selflessly risked his life to fight for all of our freedoms in the Vietnam War. I am proud to live in a land full of such men & women.

I am glad you will always have the opportunity to celebrate July 4th, Independence Day. I am also glad you will not remember September 11, 2001, a day that will forever be burned into the minds of all Americans. I am glad you will only learn about this in the history books and not experience first-hand the sadness and horror. I am glad you will not view live television broadcasting the deeds of evil men thinking they could break the spirit and pride of Americans. I am glad that you will not see the devastation of people searching for lost loved ones and trying to find new meaning in their lives. I am glad you will not cry and mourn and lose sleep sympathizing for these people as all Americans did during that time.

However, I am glad you will learn about the way such horrible acts brought out the very best in so many people. I am glad you will be taught about the heroes - first responders that saved countless lives, those who gave blood, those who gave money, those who gave a shoulder to cry on, those who gave time and sweat and tears to rebuild the attacked cities. I am glad you will know a country that is stronger than ever and whose spirit and pride can never be broken.

I am glad you will experience all that this beautiful country has to offer and I am proud to raise you as our
All American Sweetie.
