fanning mill; n. A device consisting of two vibrating screens and utilizing an air blast to clean and separate grain.

8-9-10...This old "fanning mill" is sitting out in the field...it doesn't appear to be in too of bad shape so it could probably be fixed and used again. It was a very useful piece of equipment for separating grain/seed from chaff & other debris. Prior to the invention of equipment like this, many other simple methods were used, such as, transferring the grain from one bucket to another on a windy day, letting the chaff blow away. As you can imagine, this method was very time-consuming and backbreaking work. [P8092972]
