The Plan: to be in Key West late this afternoon.

The Reality: we had to spend the night in Key Largo.

Smoke and steam billowed out from under the hood – we had a problem. Time for a new radiator. Fortunately it died across the street from an auto parts store. The auto parts store did not have a radiator for our car in stock so they ordered one which was expected at 6AM the next morning.

Even though Julia had never worked under the hood of a car before, she and offered to help Bill replace the radiator. She assured him she was a fast learner and didn't mind getting a little dirty. We registered at the Pelican Cottages (tiny rooms but the place was adorable). That afternoon Bill and Julia removed the old radiator so they could drop the new one in when it arrived the next morning.

When we woke up there was a note under our door from Julia – she had walked to the auto parts store when they opened at 6AM and had the new radiator in her room. Bill and Julia had the new radiator installed and we were back on the road while it was still morning.

It wasn't all bad – we loved the Pelican where we stayed, Bill enjoyed swimming later that afternoon and we discovered a restaurant that is now on the top of my list of favorites. The Key Lime pie was so good it was featured in Cosmopolitan Magazine as the best anywhere – we agree with that. And I would love to go back to Mrs. Mac's Kitchen again just for the fried shrimp! That good!
