Some moments in your past you never forget. I remember being in a mall in Gainesville, Florida in 1971 during a rainstorm waiting patiently for the storm to pass and then running to my car as soon as the rain let up. In the sky was a beautiful rainbow which looked like it was so close that if I drove a few blocks I might be lucky enough to find the end. I even had brief images of leprechauns and a pot of gold. Actually finding the end of a rainbow was, to me, just as far fetched to me as finding a leprechaun or a pot of gold.

Two or three blocks out of the way. Maybe a mile or two out of the way but I couldn't give up. I could see where the rainbow ended behind some trees a few more blocks away. Then when I got to the middle of the next block there it was. But it didn't end in a beautiful field of clover and flowers as I envisioned a rainbow would end. It ended smack dab in the middle of a grocery store parking lot!

I got out of my car and walked over to the end of the rainbow, confirmed that the pot of gold and leprechauns were just a myth and then walked through it! Within minutes other people who had followed the rainbow to the end were also walking around it and through it. I wondered if they were as disappointed as I was that it ended on cracked and faded asphalt! But even still, I felt somewhat special. I found the end of the rainbow.

I felt compelled to just stand there and marvel at it until every trace of it had vanished. So many times I've thought about the time I found the end of the rainbow, knowing that something that special only happened once in a lifetime! And for most people, it never happens.

Today, August 28th, 2012, we were driving on Hickam Air Force Base when a sudden rain shower forced us to put up the top on our convertible to stay dry. After the rain was over a rainbow appeared across the sky arcing completely so that both ends touched the earth. On the edge of the airfield was a Russian cargo plane – the largest plane in the world, just a few feet bigger than our own C-5. Yesterday we had watched three full-sized military helicopters (blades removed) being unloaded from the belly of that plane. (See photos below).

But today the end of the rainbow was between us and the Russian plane, actually straddling the fence sequestering the air field. We could walk a few feet to the rainbow but not around it, as the fence ran down the middle of it. I love this picture with the rainbow right in front of the plane, and since the plane is white the rainbow made the plane look like it was painted in a palette of rainbow-colored pastels.

If I'm ever lucky enough to follow a rainbow to the end again, I hope the setting is a little more picturesque. No faded cracked asphalt in the background. No Russian military plane. A field of clover and flowers would be nice. And next time maybe I'll find a pot of gold at the end of it.
