Wednesday – October 31, 2012 – We woke up to find a notice slipped under our door informing us that the Coast Guard has told us not to bring our ship to New York. The notice also said we would be kept updated about changes in the itinerary which were forced because of the weather.

The captain had been making announcements already that we would have extra Canadian ports and most likely would not be able to visit the east coast American ports so this news so it wasn't earth shattering to us. We've been watching the news and have seen the devastation brought about by Hurricane Sandy to New York and New Jersey and would have been more surprised if they said we were going to stop there.

We spent a nice quiet Halloween day in Sydney, Newfoundland, Canada today. Before we got out of the port we found a little jewelry shop and Bill bought me a necklace pendant – it has two pretty turquoise stones both shaped like hearts and displayed in a silver wire setting. Very pretty and very different.

Next stop – we viewed an old church and then visited the craft boutique in a building behind it. Our purchases were two gorgeous afghans – all hand crocheted. We bought one for Roan which has white sections and other sections which are a mixture of blue, green and teal – perfect for her teal bedroom with the under-the-sea theme and just the right size for her youth bed. We bought one for Kathleen which has white sections and then the other sections are a mixture of pastel colors, perfect for the new little girl she and Frankie are expecting in February.

We took a nice walk through the pretty little town and then back along the waterfront. Near the port was a huge craft and handcrafted jewelry sale. Bill bought me a necklace with an actual seahorse encased in it, a pair of silver dangling earrings with a ship's wheel on them and another necklace – a small brown and creamy white agate.

The shopping spree was topped off with a postcard of the giant fiddle in town – It is one of those “Did You Know?” postcards we like so much that tells the story of what is pictured on the postcard.

We still haven't been notified where we are going after Halifax tomorrow. Everyone is guessing and speculating. Hope they make the announcement in the morning.
