Thursday – November 1, 2012 – I was excited about visiting Halifax, Newfoundland in Canada. Bill and I chose the things we would each like to do; my first choice was to visit the cemetery where most of the Titanic victims were buried and Bill's first choice was to tour the Citadel.

Rather than buy an expensive tour that covered both, we joined 3 other people and hired a taxi and driver to take us to the cemetery and wait while we walked around the section where the Titanic victims are buried and then to take us to the Citadel. Since the Citadel was only a 10-minute walk from town we paid the driver when we got to the Citadel and we were on our own. If there was enough time that plan would allow us to tour the Maritime Museum where some of the artifacts from the Titanic are displayed. Even better, we paid less than 1/3 of the cost that other passengers paid for the same itinerary on the ship's excursion with no big tour bus to contend with!

Our cab driver showed us where the Titanic section was and pointed out some of the more interesting graves. When the bodies of the victims were recovered they were assigned a number and a bag with a corresponding number that held any personal effects they had when their bodies were found; the same number was also put on their grave markers. Some of the victims were later identified and their names were added to the markers but the original body ID number also remains.

Especially sad was the grave of an unknown child. Today there were some stuffed animals on the child's grave. At some point the 2-year old was identified and her name was added. My understanding is that she was identified recently. Another heartbreaker was a marker which listed the mother, father, and their 4 children (along with their name and ages) who were lost in the Titanic.
