Finally getting back to posting, after a summer break! This page was made way back in June for the SATW challenge.

This is actually the opening page for the book I'm making about my Mom's childhood. Thus the title.

The sweet little photo of my Mother is the earliest one I have of her and was probably taken in 1st grade. It is tiny! She is giving a hesitant, yet dear little smile for the camera. Along the bottom of the layout I added elements that had special meaning to my Mom's life when she was a little girl. I also added some personal mementos - the little tag with the basket with "johnny jump ups" was actually made by my Mom. Also the little basket carved out of an apricot pit was made by my Dad, something he learned to do in WW2 in Europe.

When Mom was a little girl she was always outside in the fields, meadows, and woods that surrounded her home. Gathering fruits, berries, mushrooms, flowers and all manner of wild things was a very big part of her life. She went with her immigrant Mother often to collect things for the family's use. They always used baskets to hold their treasure. Mom was also an avid recorder of the natural world, sketching and observing wild things, especially birds and wildflowers. Looking back on her early years, she recalled with great fondness how simple and poetic life was for her then. I hope that this page filled with grasses, flowers and natural objects reflects the innocence, lightness and wonder of her childhood. It is my way of honoring her youth.

I used various inks, sprays, masks, pastes, and fussy cutting to assemble this layout.

Thank you to all who look and comment, I truly appreciate your kindness!!
